Administrative Stipends, Honorariums and Overloads

Administrative Stipends:

Faculty Members who teach in the Joint Faculty and who are Chairpersons of a Dalhousie department shall be paid an administrative stipend for such duties in accordance with rates established by Dalhousie. This stipend shall be added to their regular salary and paid monthly over the period during which they serve as Chairperson.

If for any reason the Human Resources & Compensation Officer is not aware of or does not have the information in time to process the stipend with the members regular salary for the month, then any past due amounts will be paid with the next regular monthly salary payment.

Payment shall cease when the appointment as Chairperson ends, except when the member has served as Chairperson for six to eight consecutive years (not including sabbatical leaves) in which case one half of the stipend shall continue as part of the member’s regular salary, or when the member has served as chairperson for at least nine consecutive years, in which case the full stipend shall continue and be part of the member’s regular salary. In no case, however, shall the member’s regular salary in the year the Member ceased to be Chairperson, be less than the regular salary plus the administrative stipend of the preceding year.

Acting Chairperson shall be paid a stipend on the same bases as Chairpersons.

Honorariums:

Directors (or Acting Directors) of Academics Programmes at King’s who do not reduce their teaching loads but offer to teach the regular number of courses shall be paid an honorarium for such duties in accordance with rates established by King’s. This honorarium shall be added to their regular salary and paid monthly over the period during which they serve as Director.

If for any reason the Human Resources & Compensation Officer is not aware of or does not have the information in time to process with the members regular salary for the month, then any past due amounts will be paid with the next regular monthly salary payment.

Honorarium for lecturers, or for any other specific tasks will be paid in the month(s) in which the task is completed. Honorariums for Faculty members who are regular full time or regular part time Faculty members at King’s will be paid along with the regular monthly salary, and are to be reported to the Human Resources Officer in the Bursar’s Office. Honorariums to others, i.e. to individuals who are not regular full time or regular part time Faculty at King’s will be paid through accounts payable and a T4A will be issued to the individual. In this case, the request from the Programme for payment to the individual should include a cheque requisition, and completed Federal & Provincial tax forms.

A person who has been a Director of a program and serves for six to eight consecutive years (not including sabbatical leaves) will be entitled to have one half of the stipend, he/she would have received had he/she been chair of a similar sized unit at Dalhousie continue as part of his/her regular salary. If a person has served as Director for at least nine consecutive years the full stipend he/she would have received at Dalhousie will continue as a part of his/her regular salary.

Course Overloads:

Payment of course overloads for Faculty Members entitled to additional remuneration in recognition of overload teaching, will be paid in addition to regular salary pro-rated over the period of the teaching, for a fall term September to December, and a winter term, January to April.

If for any reason the Human Resources Officer is not aware of or does not have the information in time to process the course overload with the members regular salary for the month, then any past due amounts will be paid with the next regular monthly salary payment.

The overload rate is adjusted annually in accordance with the rates established by Dalhousie.
